Hair stylists are Not Artists

Posted by leanielizzie on 8/30/2009

The same thing happens wherever you go. You pay the advertised rate, but what you get depends on the stylist. Affinity is a high priced salon offering an array of beauty treatments for a hefty price. Their products tout the all-natural qualities that are all the rage at the moment, complete with the trendy decor one expects from premium priced businesses. But the trend is actually in the stylist herself. It was early on a Saturday morninig and I was so happy to get a stylist that wasn't too talkative that I forgot to be specific with my requirements. My hair is thick--so thick that she had to go back 3 times to refill the highlighting creme. She finally finished the hilights and moved on to the haircut. I'm sure I was cutting into her next appt, since thick hair takes a lot more time. I told her I liked my style and only wanted a short amount cut off. She turned me around so I couldn't see the mirror. I should have halted her right there. Instead she proceeded to CHOP my hair off into shelves (too drastic to be called layers) leaving 3-4 inch lengths of hair falling to the floor. Of course, I didn't know. When she finished I was so late for another appt that I had to literally run to the car. It wasn't until I got home that evening that I noticed the shelves. She had 'thinned' my hair to such a degree that it now resembles a grass hut. The first shelf stops around my chin. The other one is the true length of my hair (a good 2 inches shorter than when I entered the salon). I DETEST this haircut. The only way to fix it is to cut the length up to the first layer, I'm 40 years old. It will take a decade to regrow that length. I'm so livid I can barely speak. I should have known. The younger the stylist, the more she thinks she knows what's right for every client, regardless of their request. There's no point going back. The damage is done. I cannot put it back. My advice to any stylist reading this: stop ASSuming you know what will look good. Just because you think something is attractive does not mean she will. You are not an artist. You are the person who has the power to wreck someone's self-esteem. Don't ever make semi-permanent changes to someone's hair without asking, Kristen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Affinity listens and pampers

Posted by AlisonJoy on 8/5/2009

I am a VERY satisfied customer and would recommend Affinity to anyone who wants to be pampered and listened to. I have had several bad experiences at salons so I entered Affinity ready to run. However, I not only got exactly what I wanted, I felt really pampered in the process. The young lady who did my hair showed me time after time that she had heard my concerns and pointed me to products that really delivered. Thank you Affinity for a stunning head of hair that smells great and feels even better!!!

Worth Every Penny

After running errands on a busy Saturday afternoon, I landed in the chair of Affinity owner and master designer Craig Burkholder. His friendly nature immediately put me at ease and he was very intuitive when it came to figuring out what my concerns were with regard to my hair. After the initial consultation, he gave me a wonderfully relaxing scalp and neck massage. At this point, it was clear to me how dedicated he is to providing the experience of renewal to each person who comes through his door. During the cut and style portion of the visit, he clipped with delicate precision and exacting care. He followed the shears with a fine toothed comb and gave me volume I've never been able to create myself. But it's really not about the sheers or the comb. It's about the hands of a skilled artisan. And he teaches every one of his assistants to work in the same way. I was thoroughly impressed with the level of service that I received. Craig's skill does not come cheap, and it absolutely shouldn't. It's a good value.

Best Salon Experience Ever!

Posted by Sunshine39 on 3/21/2008

I have very thin, fine hair and have a very hard time finding a stylist who really knows what he is doing enough to cut my hair in a style that is truly complimentary for me. However, I took a referral from a dear friend and tried Craig at Affinity Salon and Day Spa and am so thrilled that I took the chance! Craig took so much time with me and actually gave me advice that was different than what I have heard for the last 39 years of my life...I am a client that is thrilled and my hair is looking the best it ever has and I have probably visited 30 salons over my lifetime....so I really could compare!

Spa Night is a terrific "Girls Night Out"!

I've been a customer at Affinity for over five years and can honestly say I get treated just as special now as I did the first time I walked into the salon. You get a relaxing head message with peppermint oil while discussing your last haircut (what you liked/didn't like) and what you want done today. Then after your hair is washed you get a neck massage with a warm towel. Just the perfect thing to relax you after a hard day at the office or with the kids. I hosted a "Spa Party" this past Friday night and it was a raging success!! There were 12 of us - you arrive and change into spa robes and slippers. Then relax with your friends as you nosh on appetizers provided by Affinity and wine provided by the hostess. It was a blast and everyone had a great time. The most frequent comment I heard was - why haven't we done this before? and when are we doing this again?? If you want to be treated like the salon's best customer AND get a great haircut and/or color, come to Affinity. I'm high-maintenance and very demanding, so if they can impress me that's impressive!
